NSW GOVERNMENT RESPONDS TO KIAMA BENDS SAFETY CONCERNS

Independent Member for Kiama Gareth Ward MP has today welcomed the NSW Government’s response to his Question on Notice in relation to Kiama Bends.

Following a series of accidents over the last twelve months, Mr Ward has raised his concerns with safety on the Kiama Bends with the former government and with the current State Government.

The NSW Minister for Regional Transport and Roads has indicated in her answer 734 - KIAMA BENDS SAFETY CONCERNS (nsw.gov.au) that:

“A proposal is being assessed at Kiama Bends to improve road user safety through the installation of a safety barrier with motorcycle under-run. Behavioural programs in the region will continue with further investigations of speed-management treatments”.

And furthermore, the Minister stated that:

“Line marking was completed on the Princes Highway at Kiama bends on 20 June 2023 and reflective pavement markers were installed on 21 June 2023. Cycle lanes cannot be marked on this section of road as the road geometry does not support a dedicated cycleway”.

“I welcome the Minister’s answer and the State Government’s focus on addressing safety concerns on Kiama Bends as there have been a growing list of serious accidents over the past twelve months which have been very alarming for our local community.

“Having secured record levels of infrastructure investments to upgrade our Princes Highway between Albion Park Rail and Nowra, I want to work constructively with all levels of government to improve road safety and the Kiama Bends is no exception,” Mr Ward said.
