Independent Member for Kiama Gareth Ward MP has condemned Labor Members in our region for supporting the scrapping of the Active Kids Rebate in State Parliament.
The Active Kids Rebate provides $100 to parents to help with the costs of sport for school aged children.
Mr Ward was involved in lobbying to have the scheme introduced.
“Every single local Labor MP from our region voted against a motion supporting the continuation of the Active Kids Rebate program,” Mr Ward said.
“This is a real kick in the guts to every family that is struggling with the costs of living. It’s also incredibly disappointing for local sporting clubs and their volunteers that scrip, save and fundraise to provide programs for local kids.
“Reducing childhood obesity in our region is a priority for me. I have seen firsthand what a difference this funding makes for children and parents doing it tough.
“I have started an online petition opposing these cuts. I am calling on our local community to sign this petition to send a message to the NSW Government that cutting such an important and meaningful program is a terrible decision.
“How can local Labor MPs look their local sporting clubs and parents in the face and tell them that they support them? After their vote in Parliament, they can’t,” Mr Ward concluded.
