Member for Kiama Gareth Ward MP has today advised local residents to take additional care in light of a fire that is currently burning between West Cambewarra Rd and the Princes Highway, North Nowra.

Mr Ward said that the fire is moving in an easterly direction by strong winds toward the Princes Highway and Bomaderry.

“Firefighters are on scene protecting properties in the area. There have been unconfirmed reports of property damage,” he said.

“Bomaderry will experience heavy smoke and embers blown well ahead of the fire front. These embers may create spot fires and threaten homes.

“The Princes Highway is now closed in both directions between Cambewarra Rd and Bolong Rd due to heavy smoke in the area. Local diversions are in place.

“Emergency alert telephone messages have been sent to residents in the area.

Advice:

“Take shelter in a solid structure as the fire front approaches. Protect yourself from the heat of the fire,” he said.

“Well prepared and actively defended homes can offer safety during the fire.

“An Evacuation Centre has now been opened up at the Bomaderry Bowling Club for residents who have chosen to leave their homes.

“I would also encourage people to listen to 97.3 ABC Radio for regular updates.

“There are also train delays with buses running from Kiama to Bomaderry due to the fire,” Mr Ward said.
