Massive Reduction In Local Road Fatilities

04 Jan 2019

Parliamentary Secretary for the Illawarra and South Coast Gareth Ward MP has today welcomed a massive reduction in local road fatalities over the past twelve months.

Mr Ward said that he was very pleased that local motorists have heeded the road safety message from the NSW Government.

Key statistics show:

  • Princes Highway south of Yallah to Victorian border – 3 fatalities down from 10 in 2017;
  • Illawarra Region (LGA’s of Kiama, Shellharbour, Shoalhaven, Wollongong and Wingecarribee) – 14 fatalities in 2018 down 18 (56%) from 32 in 2017; and
  • The South Coast LGA’s of Bega Valley and Eurobodalla – 4 fatalities in 2018 down from 5 in 2017.

“One of the reasons I stood for Parliament was to fix our Princes Highway,” Mr Ward said.

“I’m very proud of the record amounts of roads funding which has been secured from the NSW Government to upgrade our Princes Highway at Gerringong, the Berry bypass, Berry to Bomaderry and the Albion Park Rail bypass.

“We are making these key investments to ultimately build a better and safer Princes Highway to help save lives.

“These reductions are a step in the right direction but there is still more work to be done to improve road safety as we work towards our future goal of zero fatalities,” Mr Ward concluded.
