BURRIER ROAD DECISION

01 Aug 2023

I sincerely commend and congratulate all elected Shoalhaven City Councillors for the decision they took last night concerning the proposed daily 12-hour closure of Burrier Road during the next 12 months of roadworks.

Last night, Deputy Mayor Cr Paul Ell moved to directs the CEO (City Services) to urgently investigate with the contractor, Symal, options to amend the program of works to ensure that access for residents of Burrier Road is maintained.

I met with Burrier residents at the weekend who were given very little notice of the proposal to close Burrier Road 12 hours a day for over a year during roadworks.

Having been involved in my fair share of roadworks over the years, I know that shutdowns like this are totally for the convenience of the contractor rather than considering the needs of residents. Access can and should be facilitated for residents whilst this roadwork is taking place.

Last night’s decision is a fine example of Councillors listening to the community, responding to their concerns and showing leadership on a very serious issue.

In particular, I commend Cr Paul Ell for his efforts in working with the Burrier community and proposing last night’s motion which was carried unanimously by all elected Councillors.
