Member for Kiama Gareth Ward has today condemned the NSW Minns Labor Government’s decision to cut the $2,000 rebate for families accessing IVF, calling it the worst kind of Christmas present for families who were planning to access these services next year.
Mr Ward highlighted that this move by NSW Labor stands in stark contrast to other Labor-led states like Victoria, which are increasing funding and support for IVF treatments.
“Labor’s decision to pull this rebate next year is appalling—it’s just mean and cruel for couples who are already really struggling with the cost-of-living crisis,” he said.
“Introducing a restrictive test is a slap in the face to families struggling with infertility. Infertility is not a choice, and the short notice period for this change is completely unfair.
Mr Ward echoed the sentiments of Vanessa Ferguson, CEO of a low-cost IVF provider, regarding the negative impact of this abrupt policy change.
He also criticised Health Minister Ryan Park for prioritising bureaucratic cost-cutting over meaningful support for families.
“Minister Park is quick to talk about cost savings, but what about the emotional and financial toll this decision will take on families? IVF isn’t a luxury – it’s a lifeline.
“This government is increasingly out of touch with the real struggles which our local families and communities are facing. I call on Minister for Health Ryan Park, Premier Chris Minns and the NSW Labor Government to reverse this decision,” Mr Ward concluded.
Mr Ward’s Question on Notice to the Minister for Health on this issue is due to be answered on 27th December 2024.
