WARD MOVES MOTION ON SPEED ZONE REDUCTIONS

Member for Kiama Gareth Ward has today moved a Notice of Motion in State Parliament calling on the NSW Government to reverse changes to speed zones that will reduce speed from 80km/h to 60km/h along Riverside Drive at Minnamurra between Fig Hill Lane and Federal Street.

Mr Ward’s motion comes off the back of a speech he gave in Parliament last week on speed zone changes to Jamberoo Road. A copy of this speech can be found here

“I am concerned about these speed zone changes for a number of reasons,” Mr Ward said.

“Firstly, there has been inadequate consultation with locals on these significant changes.

“Second, these speed changes appear to be revenue raisers for the NSW Government in Sydney.

“Third, these changes appear to be lazy bureaucratic responses. Rather than investing in roads to make them safer, the NSW Labor Government are just agreeing with their Sydney-centric bureaucrats who aren’t talking with locals about these changes.

“I have built a career around investing in roads and making them safer. But so far, I have seen no evidence to justify these changes, nor has the government commented on whether these changes could be avoided with investments to make improvements to these roads.

“I call on the NSW State Government to reverse these changes,” Mr Ward concluded.

Mr Ward’s motion was:

  1. Calls on NSW Labor to reverse the speed limit reduction on Riverside Drive at Minnamurra from 80 km/h to 60km.h between Fig Hill Lane and Federal Street
  2. Calls for road works, maintenance, and design improvements rather than lazy and bureaucratic speed reductions designed to raise revenue for the NSW Government.
  3. Condemns the NSW Labor Government for failing to adequately consult with impacted local residents who are frustrated by Sydney-centric bureaucratic decisions.
