Member for Kiama Gareth Ward has used Parliament to move a motion condemning disability discrimination, abuse, neglect, exploitation and violence directed towards vulnerable people with disabilities.

“NSW and Australia should be rightfully proud of the reforms we have led in respect of disability discrimination and disability inclusion. However, disability discrimination still exists and it’s important that the Parliament reaffirm its opposition to this unacceptable behaviour,” Mr Ward said.

“I know this isn’t the number one issue for many in my electorate, but as a person living with a disability, it’s important I give a voice to people and issues that are so often ignored by this government.

“People with disabilities are vulnerable and these vulnerabilities mean that people with disabilities are more likely to experience bullying through to domestic and family violence.

“We have seen some very disappointing language from political leaders of late with respect to people with disabilities. Whilst I like a joke, even at my own expense, there should be no place for disability discrimination in any part of our community.

“Words matter and people would not be subject to the sting of hurtful commentary for reasons they cannot control or are not responsible. Fortunately, this language is only used by a minority of Australian

“I hope the House unanimously supports this motion,” Mr Ward said.

My notice of motion is:

  1. Strongly and stridently condemns disability discrimination, abuse, neglect, exploitation and violence directed towards vulnerable people with disabilities.
  2. Condemn bullying and denigration of people with disabilities through ablest language and inappropriate slurs.
  3. Notes that people with disabilities are more susceptible to abuse, including domestic and family violence, due to vulnerabilities and calls on all elected leaders to stand up and call out this behaviour when it occurs.
