Parliamentary Secretary for the Illawarra Gareth Ward MP has today announced that Wollongong City Council will receive $80,000 funding to undertake details designs of debris control structures on Allans Creek and Collins Creek under the NSW Government’s Floodplain Management Grants Program.

Mr Ward said that this funding will allow Wollongong City Council to undertake detailed designs of debris control structures on Allans Creek and Collins Creek.

“The investigation and concept design phase found that the debris control structures will reduce the flood impacts by allowing the drainage network to drain effectively,” he said.

“The cost-benefit analysis results indicate that there are significant advantages to reducing economic damages to private property, as well as protecting key public assets including road and railway embankments from potential failure during storm events.

“The 2018-19 Floodplain Management Program funds important projects that assess risk and help reduce flood impacts across NSW.

“The funding is a long-term investment to support Councils, and other Government bodies who have the primary role of managing flood risk in their communities.
“The grants assist with flood studies, flood risk management studies and plans and the implementation of works to reduce flood risk.

“They can also support works such as flood levees, flood gates, warning systems and house raising and purchase in high risk areas,” Mr Ward said.

The NSW Minister for the Environment Gabrielle Upton said the NSW Government Floodplain Management Program, administered by the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage had funded 51 projects totalling $7.08 million.

“This grant to Wollongong City Council is one of a further nine grants totaling $979,000,” she said.

“The Floodplain Management grant program supports the implementation of the NSW Flood Prone Land Policy which aims to reduce the impacts of flooding and flood liability on communities,” Minister Upton said.
