Unanderra Station will get lifts as part of a multi-million dollar accessibility upgrade under a NSW Liberals and Nationals Government.

The South Coast station will receive three new lifts and a new footbridge to provide stair-free access options to its island platform.

Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance said the $20 million upgrade will be delivered within the next term of government.

“Unanderra station will get the lifts it needs to ensure all customers, including those with a disability, the less mobile and parents with prams can easily access the platform,” Mr Constance said.

“We are committed to making public transport accessible, that’s why we’ve poured over $2.2 billion into infrastructure upgrades across the state and made 90 per cent of all journeys on public transport accessible.

“When we came to Government accessible public transport had been neglected. Labor abandoned Unanderra and was only doing two access upgrades a year, it would have taken them 90 years to upgrade all stations on the network.”

Parliamentary Secretary for the Illawarra and South Coast Gareth Ward said Unanderra is an upgrade Labor completely bungled.

“Labor promised this project but true to form from they failed to deliver just like all the promises they make on infrastructure,” Mr Ward said.

“When I make a promise to our community – I always deliver. As someone with a disability, I deeply understand the calls by locals for better access and today we can confirm that we’ll get it done.

“I have delivered each and every single commitment we’ve made. People know Labor’s appalling record on infrastructure – particularly in Labor’s safe Illawarra seats that they constantly take for granted.

The Liberal Candidate for Wollongong Zach Fitzpatrick said: “These lifts and new footbridge at Unanderra Station will make such a difference to the lives of everyday commuters, in particular, those with a disability,” he said.

“Labor were all talk and no action on these Unanderra Station lifts.

“However, I am very pleased that the NSW Government has once again delivered for our region, where Labor has failed to do so,” Mr Fitzpatrick said.

Train services at Unanderra are currently reached by sets of stairs, with one either side of the station joined together to form a third set that provides platform access.

The community and other stakeholders will have the opportunity to provide feedback on proposed designs for Unanderra as part of the planning approval process.
