Legacy Partnership Rides Towards Cycling World Cup

Member for Kiama Gareth Ward MP has today announced that six cycling projects across the Illawarra region will benefit from $100,000 in funding as part of the Wollongong 2022 Legacy Partnership Program.

The first round of the program will support projects in the lead-up to Wollongong’s UCI Road World Championships in September 2022.

Acting NSW Minister for Sport Dr Geoff Lee MP said that these projects will boost participation in cycling across the region.

“One of the greatest benefits to hosting a world cup in any sport is the legacy it provides for the community,” Mr Lee said.

“I have no doubt cycling will be bigger and better in the Illawarra region thanks to the legacy partnerships we are forming for the 2022 UCI Road World Championships.”

Member for Kiama Gareth Ward said projects range from the upgrade of BMX tracks to volunteer education programs.

“These projects will provide more opportunities for cyclists of all abilities across many disciplines,” Mr Ward said.

“One of the partnerships has secured $20,000 to help buy a Modular Pump Track which will be great to support youth cycling. The best thing about the track is it can be moved so it can be used at numerous sites and events in the Illawarra.”

Wollongong 2022 Chair Dean Dalla Valle said the partnership program was one of the many initiatives that will be delivered as part of a comprehensive legacy plan.

“The 2022 UCI Road World Championships are a landmark event for Wollongong presenting a major opportunity to showcase the region, develop the sport and attract a new generation of cyclists,” Mr Dalla Valle said.

“The Championships will be seen by over 300 million people world-wide and attract hundreds of thousands of spectators to the region.”
