Member for Kiama Gareth Ward has said it’s time to do politics differently, criticising candidates who have put up election signs before an election has been called.
Mr Ward has also criticised candidates for illegally placing campaign signs on publicly owned infrastructure.
“If they can’t follow the rules as candidates, how on Earth can we expect them to make the rules as MPs!” Mr Ward said.
“It’s time to do politics differently. This sort of visual pollution isn’t acceptable, and it shouldn’t be in our faces before the law provides.
“I call on all candidates not to illegally place election signs on public assets and infrastructure.
“I have only ever placed my signs on private property. Whilst people should be able to express a political preference at election time, the law regulates this specific period which means that signs going up early aren’t just cheating the law, they’re breaking it.
“If a small business was caught doing this, they’d be fined – and so too should these candidates,” Mr Ward concluded.
Mr Ward said that members of the public concerned about illegally placed signs should report them to their local council.
