Few people can go to work and say they saved the lives of 33 children. And today, Member for Kiama Gareth Ward recognised local school bus driver, Gary, for his quick thinking that saved lives as part of the bus fire on 28th November 2024.
“This school bus fire could have been catastrophic. But thanks to the calm and swift actions of the driver, Gary, all of the students were evacuated safely,” Mr Ward said.
“No injuries is a blessing in a dire situation like this and I know having been contacted by parents– that our local Kiama community is incredibly grateful to Gary – and I am delighted to be able to recognise him today for his heroic bravery and dedication.
“Thank you to our real-life community hero Gary. Lots of parents were hugging their kids just a little bit tighter because of your actions. We are so grateful for what you have done,” Mr Ward said.
Kiama Coaches Managing Director Mr John King said:
“The respect that Gary has with his students is second to none. This is what saves lives,” John King said.
“Our employees recently completed refresher evacuation training which proves to the commitment of our company to deliver the highest standard of safety.
“I can’t praise the commitment of our team, Gary and the local community enough,” Mr King said.
