Funding Boost for Kiama Meals on Wheels

Member for Kiama Gareth Ward MP has presented funding to representatives from Kiama Meals on Wheels Inc to help upgrade their facilities.

Mr Ward said that he was extremely pleased to secure this funding from the New South Wales Government for this terrific community project.

“This funding boost will allow for specialist nutrition support to promote wellbeing for older Australians,” he said.

“It will allow for a Williams Australian manufactured three door freezer to store diet specific, nutritious and ready to eat meals for residents living in the Kiama Municipality.

“I would like to acknowledge Joanne North, Manager of Kiama Meals on Wheels Inc and her team of volunteers who help others in our local community.

“Kiama Meals on Wheels do an outstanding job – they not only provide flexible food options to help people continue to live independently – they also bring people together to enjoy a meal with company and arrange transport to and from the venue.

“But it’s not just meals. Sadly loneness is a major concern amongst older people. A visit from a Meals on Wheels volunteer may be the only contact people have each week.

“When I was visiting today, I was asked to join Kiama Meals on Wheels for a delivery run. I look forward to taking up this offer early in 2019,” Mr Ward concluded.

Joanne North, Manager of Kiama Meals on Wheels Inc said: “Kiama Meals on Wheels is a grassroots community based volunteer organisation working in the community for the community. The volunteers deliver healthy nutritious meals, a friendly chat and at times if needed a welfare check,” she said.

“Volunteers are often the connector to the community for our customers who share stories, and experiences along the way. All meals delivered meet the National Meal Guidelines that have been specifically designed to address the nutrient needs of people over the age of 65.

“Kiama Meals on Wheels promotes Wellness and enhances peoples independence by maximising their ability to remain living at home by providing ongoing nutritional support and reducing the impact of social isolation.

“We would like to thank our local Member Gareth Ward for securing this funding and for his ongoing support,” Mrs North said.
