Member for Kiama Gareth Ward MP has today announced that Opal fares are set to become more affordable for people across our state from Monday 6th July 2020 in a move to make travel more affordable and accessible for local commuters across the Illawarra and South Coast.
Mr Ward said that the New South Wales Government’s goal is for a sustainable and fair system for all customers no matter which mode of transport they take.
“These new measures are also to help manage physical distancing and encourage customers to adjust their travel where possible," he said.
“The changes we are announcing will make off-peak travel more affordable and we really encourage people at this time to travel in the off-peak.
“Off-peak travel will incur a 50% discount when travelling by bus, train, metro and light rail travel for a three month period between July and September. I encourage customers to take advantage of the discount and travel when the network isn’t as busy.
“I want to reassure all customers that the Senior and Pensioner Gold Opal cards will continue to enjoy the $2.50 daily cap. For all other customers, the $50 weekly cap will be maintained to provide cost certainty and affordability for regular commuters,” Mr Ward said.
