Parliamentary Secretary for the Illawarra and South Coast Gareth Ward is encouraging drivers across the region to stay alert this Easter long weekend and take extra care on our roads.

Mr Ward said an increase in traffic is expected as friends and families make the most of the Easter long weekend.

“This Easter long weekend not only will you find more motorists on our roads, but you will also see extra police officers on patrol and conducting random breath and drug testing,” he said.

“Double demerit points will be in force from midnight tonight Wednesday 12th April until midnight Monday 17th April.

“I want our local community to enjoy their Easter long weekend with loved ones and friends.

“Too many lives are unnecessarily lost on our roads as a result of speed, alcohol, drugs and fatigue.

“The message is simple, ‘obey the road rules and drive to the conditions’.

“Make no mistake; those who do the wrong thing and put lives at risk will be prosecuted by New South Wales Police.

“We know double demerits are an effective road safety initiative – we have reduced deaths on our roads during holiday periods by a third since they were introduced.

“I encourage local motorists to take extra care on our roads during this Easter long weekend,” Mr Ward concluded.
