Parliamentary Secretary for the Illawarra and South Coast, and Member for Kiama Gareth Ward has today announced that the Illawarra is set to receive 30 new one and two bedroom social housing homes this year thanks to the New South Wales Government’s sale of heritage housing at Millers Point.

Mr Ward said that the new units will provide welcome relief for those in the region who are on the waiting list for housing.

“I am delighted that those on the waiting list for social housing in the Illawarra will soon have more options to stay in the region as a result of the Millers Point sales,” he said.

“The 30 units will cover three suburbs in the Illawarra: Bellambi, Corrimal, and Unanderra, and are expected to be completed over late 2016–early 2017.

“Already the Millers Point sales have added 18 new one and two bedroom units to the Illawarra this year, with new homes completed at Mt Warrigal and Warilla.

“To date 47 Government owned properties in Millers Point have been sold – raising almost $116 million – with each sale in Millers Point creating up to five new homes.

“The sale of the properties in the Millers Point precinct will generate an estimated $500 million to help finance a more sustainable social housing system to cater for a growing population.

“Family and Community Services estimates slightly over 59,000 people are currently on the public housing waiting list, with the new developments helping provide stable housing for those in need,” Mr Ward concluded.
